THE DIVIDING CONNECTION
The Dividing Connection, a satirical play on duplexes, challenges the idea of domesticity, private spaces, and community. Playing off the traditional concept of a shared wall used in duplex construction, the Dividing Connection glorifies and challenges the idea of division between living spaces. The first design strategy implemented in the design is a grand separating wall sliced between the organic shape of the structure. This wall, made of corten steel, creates a heavy physical and visual division between the houses, however, is alleviated of its weight as it approaches the public street side. The change in shape from the top of the property to the bottom is a metaphor that describes the division of residents on the outside, although, once entered, is relieved of its demanding division, allowing for personal interactions.
